What is the principle of BET surface analysis?

The principle of BET surface analysis is to determine the actual surface area as opposed to the apparent surface area. It therefore represents the total surface area per unit mass and is expressed in m²/g.

Three categories can be identified to classify the different methods of measuring and analyzing specific surface area by BET:

  • Gas adsorption (that is, measuring the number of gas molecules adsorbed in one or more layers on the solid),
  • Liquid-phase adsorption (such as fatty acids, dyes, etc.)
  • Physical methods (using X-rays, radioactivity, heat of adsorption, etc.).

Among these three analysis methods mentioned above, one of them was described by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller. These three researchers described the determination by gas adsorption, which is why it is known as the “BET method” or “BET technique.” This method is also the most important and the most widely used.

This well-known BET method determines the amount of gas required to form a monomolecular layer around the solid sample. Since the cross-section of molecules is a characteristic specific to each gas, it is then possible to determine the total surface area of the solid.

Mastering specific surface area measurement and porosimetry

Specific surface area, calculated according to the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller equation, is a fundamental property for characterizing divided or porous materials.

The BET method accounts for every crevice and pore accessible to molecules during nitrogen adsorption.

Analyzing porosity and pore size distribution

Our training deepens understanding of porous texture, which is essential for correlating a material's physical properties with its performance. We teach how to assess the pore volume through the three categories defined by IUPAC:

  • Micropores : diameter below 2 nm.
  • Mesopores : between 2 and 50 nm.
  • Macropores : above 50 nm.
