ISO 9227: what does salt spray testing involve?
The ISO 9227 standard specifies the general conditions for conducting neutral salt spray (NSS), acetic acid salt spray (AASS) and copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS) tests.
The test involves exposing specimens in a controlled chamber in which a saline solution is sprayed as a mist. The exposure time is defined according to the test protocol and the purpose of the study.
This accelerated exposure is used in particular to:
- compare the corrosion resistance of several materials or coatings;
- assess the effectiveness of an anti-corrosion treatment;
- identify the appearance of red or white corrosion;
- observe blistering, flaking or coating degradation;
- check the durability of a surface protection;
- compare different suppliers or treatment processes.

The different types of salt spray testing according to ISO 9227
The NSS (Neutral Salt Spray) test uses a saline solution under neutral conditions. It is a commonly used method for assessing and comparing the corrosion resistance of metallic materials and coatings.
The AASS (Acetic Acid Salt Spray) test acidifies the test environment to create more aggressive conditions. This method may be used in particular for certain decorative coatings or specific protective systems.
The CASS (Copper Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray) test adds copper chloride to the saline solution, creating a particularly corrosive environment.
The choice between NSS, AASS and CASS depends on the material, coating, industrial sector and standards applicable to the product.

The salt spray test is an accelerated corrosion test used to assess the performance of metallic materials, with or without protective coatings, when exposed to a controlled saline atmosphere. ISO 9227 defines, in particular, the NSS, AASS and CASS methods.
ISO 9227 does not specify a universal exposure time for each product. The duration must be defined in the specification applicable to the product or in the test requirements.
The test can reveal the onset and progression of corrosion phenomena, as well as certain discontinuities, pores or defects present in metallic, organic or anodic coatings, or conversion coatings.
The NSS method corresponds to neutral salt spray and is used in particular for metals, alloys and various protective coatings. The AASS and CASS methods use more specific environments and are particularly suited to certain decorative coatings and systems applied to aluminium.
